Professional Interpreter Program

This 9 to 12 month program provides candidates with civil, immigration and federal terminology along with the protocol for writing summaries and transcripts as an Analytical Linguist. This program leads to a Certificate as a Professional Interpreter. Courses include Analytical Linguist, Civil, Federal and Immigration Court.

The following 4 courses must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% of better in order to receive a Certificate of Completion in the Professional Interpreter Program.

Interpreting Civil Proceedings (Court/Civil) - $595.00 (includes a $100 non-refundable registration fee)

Pre-requisite: All students who take this course must pass our admission test or attend our free introductory course offered one week before the beginning of the quarter (check class schedule for dates and times).

This course covers family law proceedings, such as petition for dissolution of marriage actions, custody of minors, visitation rights, domestic violence, restraining orders, civil harassment orders, conservatorship, and emancipation of minors. Furthermore, this course includes unlawful detainers, probate proceedings, contract law, corporate law, malpractice, and personal injury actions. The protocol for depositions and the instructions to deponents are part of this course.  This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.


Interpreting as an Analytical Linguist (Court/Analytical Linguist)- $595.00

Job description of an Analytical Linguist. Principles of translation applied to the duties of an Analytical Linguist. Acquisition, verbal reporting and written reporting of a wiretap conversation. Coded words and phrases. Format utilized in the preparation of a wiretap transcription. Note-taking techniques applied to the verbal reporting of a wiretap to a Federal Agent. Colloquialisms. English and Spanish syntax. Writing skills in English and Spanish. Ethics of the Analytical Linguist, including confidentiality, accuracy and professionalism. Techniques utilized in the preparation of a wiretap summary. Comparing a summary and a transcript of a wiretap conversation. This course includes various practices where the student will go over all the steps included in a typical case – from listening to the wiretap to the preparation and translation of the transcript. This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.


Interpreting in Immigration Court (Court/Immigration) - $595.00

Pre-requisite: All students who take this course must pass our admission test or attend our free introductory course offered one week before the beginning of the quarter (check class schedule for dates and times).

This eleven week course includes immigration terminology, abbreviations and type of forms. Master Calendar Hearings and Individual Merits Hearings are presented during this course using interpreting practices that illustrate the typical cases heard by Immigration Court Judges. Interpreting practices and translation of the corresponding vocabulary are presented for the following immigration proceedings: Removal hearings, contested removal hearings with and without expert witnesses testifying, application for asylum and withholding of removal with voluntary departure requested in the alternative, cancellation of removal for a lawful resident, generic oral decisions and orders of the Immigration Judge, statement of law on eligibility for relief, Life ACT, NACARA, and a variety of master calendar hearings. The EOIR Removal Proceeding Process is thoroughly explained for a better understanding of the immigration process. This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.


Advanced Interpreting Techniques in Criminal and Civil Matters (Court/Civil/Federal) - $595.00

Pre-requisite: All students who take this course must pass our admission test or attend our free introductory course offered one week before the beginning of the quarter (check class schedule for dates and times).

This course includes legal terminology and offenses corresponding to Federal Court. Indictments, superseding indictments, federal plea agreements, racketeering, inside trading, interstate shipment, drug trafficking, trademarks, copyrights, corporate law and probate are some of the documents and cases included in this course.  Expert witness testimony in weapons, firearms, bladed weapons, typewriters, DNA, fingerprints, and drugs are also part of this course.  Mock examinations at the level of the Federal Court Interpreter Examination are presented throughout the duration of this course. Exam taking techniques are also introduced in this course. Consecutive techniques leading to segments of 120 terms are introduced.  Simultaneous techniques leading to a speed of 200 words per minute, including simultaneous practices of expert witness testimony, are also introduced in this course.  This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.
