Medical Interpreter Program

This nine to twelve month program will provide you with the medical terminology and interpreting skills required to work as a medical interpreter in hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices.

The following six courses must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% or better in order to receive a Certificate of Completion in the Medical Interpreter Program.

Pre-requisite: All students must be fluent in Spanish and English and have written skills at high school level or above.

Recommendation: Attend our free group orientation prior to registering in your first course.

Interpreting Techniques and Medical Terminology - 5 Weeks $298.00

General medical vocabulary is presented in Spanish and English. Colloquialisms, slang and idiomatic expressions are also presented in this course. Techniques for the simultaneous mode of interpreting leading to a maximum speed of 130-150 words per minute are also part of this course. This course consists of 12 hours of instruction, quizzes and one final exam. Access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory is required and free.

Consecutive Techniques and Medical Terminology – 5 Weeks $298.00

Pre-requisite: All students must successfully complete Interpreting Techniques and Medical Terminology.

Consecutive techniques leading to a maximum length of 40-60 terms per segment are introduced. This course consists of 12 hours of instruction, quizzes and one final exam. Access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory is required and free.

Interpreting for Hospitals – 5 Weeks $298.00

Pre-requisite:  All students must successfully complete Consecutive Techniques and Medical Terminology.

This  course covers the following: Environmental History Forms for Pediatric Asthma Patient, substance abuse and OSHA Required Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire. We will also discuss idiomatic expressions from English into Spanish and vice-versa. Other forms covered will be Adult Health History Form, Authorization for Use or Disclosure of Imaging Information, and Advanced Directive.

This course includes specialized medical vocabulary presented in Spanish and English. Terminology includes: pediatrics and women’s clinic. This course consists of 12 hours of instruction, quizzes and one final exam. Access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory is required and free.

Interpreting for Medical Clinics – 5 Weeks $298.00

Pre-requisite: All students must successfully complete Interpreting for Hospitals.

Cases involving Pediatric/Neonatal Care as well as family planning, parents' rights and responsibilities will be covered. Vocabulary includes communicable diseases, the "Baby Blues", sexually transmitted diseases, Consent for Cath and Lab Procedures, occupational health and finally, Authorization for Release of Medical Information.

This course  consists of 12 hours of instruction, quizzes and one final exam.  Access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory is required and free.

Sight Translation Techniques for Medical Interpreters – 5 Weeks $298.00

Pre-requisite: All students must successfully complete all of the above courses in the Medical program.

Sight translation of typical forms used in hospitals, such as MRI screening, refusal to permit blood transfusion, and discharge instructions are discussed in this course in addition to  history forms for pediatric asthma patients, consent for catheter lab procedure, and adult health history forms.  Sight translation techniques such as localization/normalization and re-structural changes in the transfers are presented in this course. We perform sight readings of various documents used in the healthcare industry to illustrate all the sight translation principles.  This course  consists of 12 hours of instruction, quizzes and one final exam.  Access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory is required and free.

Preparation for the Medical Certification Exam – 5 Weeks $298.00

This course will provide medical examination lectures and practices suitable for the medical certification exams. Fine-tuning of your skills will take place to be better prepared for any medical interpreting exam. Review of medical terminology learned is included and, all three techniques of interpretation (Consecutive, Simultaneous, Sight Translation) will be practiced and fine-tuned in this course.
