About the State Exams

State Court Interpreter Exam Information

The written component of the Court Interpreter Exam is offered on an on-going basis. The oral component of the state exam is offered only twice a year. The qualifications required are:

1. The candidate must possess native-like mastery of both English and the second language.

2. Perform the three modes of interpreting; consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation.

Federal Court Interpreter Exam Information

The Federal Court Interpreter certification is administered by the National Center for State Courts. The Federal examination is offered every two years.

Medical Interpreter Exam Information

The state of California has not resumed certification testing for medical interpreters.
